The Voices of KISS, The Lead Vocalists on Three Sides of the Coin

In episode #3 we discuss the voices of KISS, the lead vocalists. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, Eric Singer, Tommy Thayer, Bruce Kulick and Eric Carr.

  • Excellent topic! I have to put this out there, and obviously you guys know it on some level, KISS isn’t like any other band (maybe the Beatles come close) in that they represent something larger than themselves and certainly larger than they could ever maintain. It can’t be easy for them to live up to the image that we, the fans, have given them. One thing that I got early on is that it doesn’t really matter what is true or what isn’t — as long as WE believe it is. As long as we live it and believe it then the magic can exist. In that way KISS has become like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. So for me, KISS became something to aspire to. The message that I could reach any height if I believe in myself. To this very day I have never taken drugs nor drank, and I honestly believe it is because Gene and Paul said I didn’t need to get wasted — and then Ace and Pete proved it. I don’t think it is even important if they believe their message just that they beat it into our heads. For some reason as a kid I likened being a KISS fan to being a knight, and that came with certain responsibilities. Just something I thought you guys might like to touch on. When I look around online I don’t find many folks with that attitude –, but I have to believe that I wasn’t the only one who “got” the message and I’d like to believe I’m not the only one who still kinda’ lives by it.

Oh yeah, I don’t know if you guys have covered this yet — as I’m just now working on catching up. I didn’t see it any of the subject lines though. What about an episode that deals with all the unreleased songs most of us have managed to round up through the years?

    On topic —
Personally, I love that Bruce and Eric S. and Tommy are singing. It feels like a return to the status quo for me. I think Bruce will only get better vocally, and I loved the lyrics of I Walk Alone. I couldn’t agree more that Tommy should expand his repertoire and shouldn’t be forced to try and be Ace jr. I think his involvement can only help if he’s allowed to have input. He ended up in KISS because he was a fan and therefor has a point of view that could prove valuable to the rest of the guys. Eric Singer, at this point, feels like the ONLY guy that could have sat on Eric Carr’s drum stool. He’s a lover of music, and he takes the band seriously. I’m very proud of how much he’s grown. If I were ever going to fault KISS for anything it is that I felt that Eric Carr was always very under-used. He/we never got to know what all he was truly capable of.

Gene is actually a pretty amazing vocalist. When he sings across the stage from a born master like Paul it makes it hard for us to see it. His range is a wonder. He sticks to a lower register, and it works but when he decides to howl his growl and power are undeniable.

Paul is without question the greatest rock frontman ever! He owns any stage he steps on and his voice is controled power fully unleashed. I agree that his vocals have sounded so different in the last few years, but I believe that anything Paul’s age may take his attitude, pride and desire will more than compensate for. Having said that, I agree however that anything they decide to throw into the mix will only make them that much better.

Thanks for the great show guys!
